Bellingham Police and Whatcom County Jail

The Bellingham Police Department runs patrol and investigations inside the city. When a person is arrested, the officers transport them to the Whatcom County Jail, which is a short drive from downtown. The jail is run by the Whatcom County Sheriff. The Bellingham police do not keep inmates in long-term custody, so the live roster is the county one.

The county posts a live jail roster at the Whatcom County Jail Roster Search page. You can search by name. The record shows the booking date, the charges, the bail, and the court date if set. For active cases, this is your first stop.

The Bellingham police site has useful context. The screenshot below shows the page.

How to Search the Bellingham Jail Roster

Start with a last name. The Whatcom County tool often finds a match on the first try. If the name is common, add a first name or a date of birth. The roster shows the current inmates and recent bookings. Older records are not in the live tool. For those, you need to file a public records request with the Whatcom County Sheriff or with the Bellingham Police Department.

Under RCW 42.56, the Public Records Act, both agencies must reply within five business days. The reply may be the record, a denial, or a time estimate.

If the person is no longer in the Whatcom County Jail, they may have been moved to state prison. Check the Washington DOC Incarcerated Search. The state tool shows all current prison inmates by name, age, and DOC number.

Note: The Whatcom County Jail Roster lists people held right now and recent bookings, so a name may drop off the live tool after release.

Bellingham Jail Roster Laws

The core law is RCW 70.48.100, the jail register law. It says every Washington jail must keep a register of the name of each person held, the hour and date of the booking, the cause of the booking, and the hour, date, and manner of release. The Whatcom County Jail follows this rule. The log is open to the public.

The Public Records Act in RCW 42.56 gives the public the right to ask for that log. You do not need to give a reason. You do not need to live in the state. Some records are held back, like medical files and mental health notes, but the jail register is open.

The Washington Department of Corrections was set up under RCW 72.09. The DOC runs state prisons. A Bellingham arrest that leads to a prison sentence shows up in the DOC system after the court rules.

Court Data for Bellingham Cases

Use the Odyssey court portal to find the court case tied to a Bellingham booking. Search by name. The portal shows the case number, the next hearing, and the court. For city cases, the filing court is the Bellingham Municipal Court. For felony cases, the file is with Whatcom County Superior Court.

Pair the jail roster with the court docket. One tells you where the person is. The other tells you when they appear next.

Note: Not every jail booking leads to a court filing, so a name on the roster may drop off when charges are declined.

Bellingham Custody Alerts

The VINE service is the statewide tool for custody status alerts. It is free. Sign up with a phone number or an email. VINE sends a message when the inmate is booked, moved, or released. It covers both the Whatcom County Jail and state prisons.

For state prison cases, the DOC Victim Services Program at (800) 322-2201 offers advanced notification. The DOC Search Resources page lists more tools, including federal inmate lookups.

For a Washington criminal history check, use the WATCH service from the State Patrol. WATCH is the official state source for conviction data.

Bellingham Booking Path

Most adult arrests in Bellingham come from the Bellingham Police Department or the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office. Both feed the Whatcom County Jail on Grand Avenue. That is the main jail for the Bellingham jail roster check. The jail logs the name, charge, and booking time. Data lands on the online Whatcom roster soon after intake.

Short holds may sit at the Bellingham police station first. A longer hold moves to the county bed. For city-only charges, the case heads to Bellingham Municipal Court. That court handles gross misdemeanors and other low-level cases. For felony charges, the case moves up to Whatcom County Superior Court.

Pair the Bellingham jail roster with the Odyssey court portal to check court dates. For a move to state prison, use the DOC search. Sign up for free alerts at VINE to catch any change in custody status.
